I practiced like crazy with Millie and am quite happy with my progress. I found working with pantographs rather weird in the beginning, standing behind the machine, I needed some time to get used to following the line with a laser not even looking at the stitching. The quilting was a little wobbly at first but I soon figured out what speed to use and where to stop and how to make smooth curves. The only thing I still have to really concentrate on is how to take a step to the side without interrupting my quilting or the pattern. I stitched several muslin practice pieces with several layers of stitching in different thread colours on top of each other, and when I finally got bored with that, I decided it was time to quilt a real quilt.

I finished the Dessert Time top specifically for this purpose. And I have to rant a little about the pattern. It is labeled as "easy", and I agree, looking at the picture it seems to be a simple pattern and I didn't even look at the instructions. But then I couldn't figure out the math to make the borders work. The pattern uses a Jelly Roll, and I couldn't make the strip width work with the centre part of the quilt, so I had to look at the pattern. And I was quite shocked to read that I was supposed to just stitch the strips together and then adjust the seams until the border length fit the quilt. What?? That is a horrible way to add borders to a quilt and can easily lead to frustration about ending up with a quilt that won't lie flat. And it is definitely not a quilt that you can make "in a day" as the pattern suggests. Well, I usually don't use patterns anyway, and this was an excellent example why. But I digress...

I mounted the top to the frame and started quilting. And I love, love, love my Millie. It is so much easier to move the machine than pushing the quilt around under the needle. I did not use a pantograph, I wanted to practice my free-motion skills and filled the areas with designs that I mostly found on Lori Kennedy's site "The Inbox Jaunt". Lori quilts on her domestic machine, you don't need a longarm for her designs, and she has step by step instructions. Check out her tutorials if you want to do free motion quilting and are bored with stippling. I am almost done with the quilt and although it is far from perfect, I am quite happy with it.
